February 2024 Banned Book Club with Emerald Cocktail Kitchen

There are only 20 tickets available for this event!

Across the country books are being banned, particularly books that highlight LGBTQ+ experiences, and content relating to Black history and the Black lived-experience. In the most oppressive schools, libraries are being eliminated all together and being turned into detention centers. As advocates for informational freedom we hope that this book club will bring greater awareness to banned books and share information about who is banning them and why. We are partnering with Emerald Cocktail Kitchen for two series of meetups: Late Winter/Early Spring, which will run from January-April; and Autumn, which will run from September-November.

For February we'll be highlighting the book Stamped from the Beginning:A Graphic History of Racist Ideas by by Ibram X. Kendi and Joel Christian Gill.
Racism has persisted throughout history—but so have antiracist efforts to dismantle it. Through deep research and a gripping narrative that illuminates the lives of five key American figures, preeminent historian Ibram X. Kendi reveals how understanding and improving the world cannot happen without identifying and facing the racist forces that shape it.

In collaboration with award-winning historian and comic artist Joel Christian Gill, this stunningly illustrated graphic-novel adaptation of Dr. Kendi’s groundbreaking Stamped from the Beginning explores, with vivid clarity and dimensionality, the living history of America, and how we can learn from the past to work toward a more equitable, antiracist future.

By purchasing a ticket to join this event, you're granted access to Emerald Cocktail Kitchen for this private book discussion and social. Your ticket includes the specialty mocktail or cocktail that corresponds with the book!
